Definition

The Basque Country faces an accelerated aging process, which has reached a historical maximum in 2023 with an aging rate of 169.8%. This means that, for every 100 children under 16 years of age, there are 169 people over 64 years of age. The aging rate in Euskadi has seen an increase of 4.7 percentage points compared to the previous year.

Bizkaia has the highest aging index with 181.2%, followed by Gipuzkoa with 163.5% and Álava with 148%.

The Adecco Foundation highlights the growing importance of the active population over 50 years of age in the context of this aging. This age group is now considered a crucial element for the competitiveness of companies and the country's economy. However, it is noted that age discrimination in the workplace contradicts efforts to adapt to demographic reality and preserve social welfare systems.

A study carried out by the ISEAK Foundation illustrates the normalization of ageism in the workplace.

Age discrimination is spreading to other social areas with less resistance, due to less social awareness of its impacts.

Several important lessons can be drawn from accelerated aging in the Basque Country and its social and labor implications that cover demographics, the labor market, age discrimination and public policies. These lessons are crucial to understanding the current and future challenges faced by both the Basque Country and other European regions with similar demographic dynamics:

  • Demographic Impact on Society
  • Importance of the Senior Active Population
  • Challenges of Ageism in the Labor Market
  • Social Awareness about Age Discrimination
  • Adaptive Public Policies
  • Innovation in Human Resources Management
  • Health and Wellbeing of the Aging Population

These lessons underscore the complexity of the challenges presented by population aging and the importance of addressing them through a holistic approach that involves all sectors of society.
